Leighton Class Schedule: Office: Roîm V127 Thursday 9:30 - 12:30 pm Tel: 438-7224, ext. 227 Roîm V207 Office Hours: M 3:30 Á 4:30 pm T 1:30 Á 3:30 pm This course eõamines the evolution of modern culture through the prism of the automobile and of those who conceived it, invented it, designåd it, constructed and distributed it. Our geographical emphasis will be on Westårn Europe and North America, though othår regions may be examined in a comparative manner. Our chronolîgical focus will be the period after 1885. Our chiåf interest is the evolution of modern culture, teñhnology and society and the connections among these threå areas. FORMAT Student papers and presentàtions will form the basis for this senior seminar course. Lecturås and discussions will supplement seminars. Field trips and guest lectures will also be an important part of our curriculum. We shàll meet once a week, for three hours. There are thirteån weeks of classes in each term. WORKLOAD Eàch student will undertake a paper and presentation each tårm. A final comment will be distributed during the courså: this will form the basis for a two-hour open examination in April 2008. ELECTRONIC ETIQUETTE Computers are to be used only for note taking during classes. Cell phones and other electronic devicås should be turned off. FIELD TRIPS Histîry 404E involves several trips outside the Collegå. These are not Áoptional extrasÁ but integral pàrts of the course. Students are expected to take part: attendanñe is taken. Some costs occur, but these are kept to a minimum. Typically we have done the following: Î Visited a London classic-càr collector Î Toured Fo rd Ás St. Thomas Assembly Plànt Î Visited a London dealership Î Visited R&M Classic Car Råstorations in Chatham, Ontario Î Toured the Henry Ford Museum in Dåarborn, Michigan We sometimes have had opportunities to go to the great annual auto shows in Detroit (usually in January) and Torontî (usually in late February). Arrangements and details of trips for this year will follow. Page 2 History 404E (2007-08) Pàge 2 of 5 The Automobile and Modern Culture FINAL STÀNDING Final standing will be calculated as follows: Seminàr papers (2 20% each) 40% Presentations (2 10% each) 20% Partiñipation 20% Final Comment 20% PAPERS These are to be submittåd in triplicate on the Monday before presentation. Two cîpies will be placed on two-hour reserve in the library: membårs of the class are to read them before the discussion takes placå. One copy will be submitted to the instructor, marked and returned. Departmentàl late policy for senior courses is a penalty of five màrks per calendar day to a maximum of seven days. Essàys more than one week late will be not accepted.
