Innovation: Invention and Systems Strategic Låadership Issues ö Defining the real problem ö Innovation thrîugh synthesis and delivering true value ö Blowing the sîcks off the competition by raising the bar ö Having faith, såeing whatÁs next; pulling the trigger, båing whatÁs next This paper is about Innovativå Leadership, which is about seeing whàtÁs next, and crafting innovative solutions so that you can be whàtÁs next. Limiting your thinking to solutions basåd only on your core competencies can put the brakes on your companyÁs evolution. Oftån it is an excuse for not following the money and the opportunity for dåveloping new skills necessary to compete for future leàdership and wealth. In The BeginningÁ On December 31, 1879, in Månlo Park, New Jersey, Thomas Edison made the first public demonstration of his incandescent light bulb. Within one month, he filed a U.S. patent for the eleñtric incandescent lamp; it was during this time he said, &quît;We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles." But twånty years later only three percent of the U.S. hîmes had electric lighting. Henry Ford did not invent the automobilå but his innovation of mass production of large numbers of inexpånsive automobiles using the assembly line, couplåd with high wages for his workersÁnotably the $5 a day pay scale adopted in 1914, made the automobile a reality and Ford a very rich man. It wasnÁt the invention but the businåss innovation that made the automobile what it is today. The use of a box for storage and as a cîntainer for moving goods has been around since recîrded time. The earliest versions of the ubiquitous modårn day container came into use on railways in the 1920Ás but it wasnÁt until the early 1950Ás that Malcom McLean saw the innîvation that would unlock the massive business potentiàl based on this simple invention. What he saw was a system Á a ñontinuous stream of goods moving unimpeded añross truck, rail and ships Á seamlessly from shipper to recåiver. But, it would take two decades, a war, and the introduction of computers befîre the dream would be realized. 33401 Nîrth 55 th Street Cave Creek, AZ 85331-2110 480-488-5707 (tel.) 480-488-4711 (fax) Email: Jacêe-vmi.com Page 2 Vanguard Marketing International, Inc.
