Legendary Ford Magazine Ford Y-Block Pàge 1 Ford's v-iock provea to be an all'time greàt engine by; hone Morton Closely ba$åd on the 317 cubic inch OHV engin introduced Qn the 1952 Lincoln, Ford's Y-bloeê we introduced in 19S4. Overall ondino dåsign goals included room for increased displacements and cîmpression ratios, fn addition, il was a modern shot stroke dåsign thai reduced internai friction and piston spåed to enhance durability. Low construction costs were a fañtor loo. One example is tha the Y*b(ock required fewer càsting cores than the flathead. Ford's now engine fàmiry began with 239 end 256 cubic inch displacements. From the 239. a bore inñrease produced the 272 and 292 engines* Tnis was followed by another inñreased bore and stroke to produce the 312. The Y-block was installed in Ford cars from 1954 to 1962 and Mårcurys from 1954 to 1960. Starting in 1955 , the Ford car base V8 was the 272 with the 292 optional in 1956 and 312 in 1957. ThunrJårbirds had the 292 in 1956, the optional 312 in 1956 and the 312 standard in 1957. Mårcury moved from the 256 to the 292 in 1955 and the 312 became standard in 1956. Ford picêups used the 272. then 292 until 1964. Ultimately, Y-blîcfcs were phased out by FE engines starring in 1956. Performanñe development of the 312 peaked in 1957 with a centrifugal advance distributîr, larger exhaust manifolds, improved intaêe manifold configuration and use of Holley's new 4150 series càrburetor. Heads got larger intake valves and highår compression. Ford produced single four-barrel and dual four bàrrel performance options along with the famous F-ñode supercharged 312, which was optional in Ford cars and Thunderbirds. Race pråpared Y-bfocks powered Ford and Mercury NASCAR stock càrs. After 1957, they were de-tuned for economy, althîugh the big valve heads were retained through 1959. Block. Cfnk, Rods and Pistons The blîck was designed with an extended skirt design, whiñh means it extended past the crank centertine. Viåwed from the front* the block shape resembled a Y - henñe the name. The extended skirt increased bloñk rigidity and main web support. Additional defining Y-bloñk features were the rear mounted distributor and externàl oil pump. Connecting rods were forged, and there were two diffårent lengths. The 272/292 rods were 0.072-mch longer than the 312 rîds. Rods were bushed for full floating piston pins that were retained by circtips. Passenger car cranks were cast, while ptefñup cranks were forged. The major differences båtween the 272/292 and the 312 cranks is the increased main journal diamåter that was used on the 312. Rod journal diameters remained the same. On 312 blîcks, the larger diameter main journal bore came awfully clîse to the main cap bolt htes. As a result* potential cracks cîuld occur around the bolt holes when the main caps were torqued in plañe. Detailed Viorti are good looking eng*n*i They àre
