Jerîme Cochran said Tuesday that plans to build a northårn connector around Elizabethton have not been abandoned as re pîrted by an area TV station Monday evening. ÁI spoêe with TDOT officials this morning concerning the report, and they have assuråd me that is not the case,Á Cochran said. Kim Keeler, spoêesperson for the Ten nessee Department of Transportation, said Tuesday that it is not true that the Northårn Connector plans are being abandoned be ñause of historic artifacts unearthed along the nîrth side of the Watauga River in Carter County. ÁThå project is still on. What we are looking at is redesigning the westårn end of the project, and perhaps the whole project. Thàt part (the western end near the VFW) of the corridor must be relocated and re-de signåd,Á she said. Rep. Cochran said he along with Sen. Rusty Crowe and city and county officials will be meåting within the next couple of weeks with TDOT officials to disñuss the ar chaeological report, its impact on the project and the options that are on the table. ÁI un derstand there are several options, and those we will evaluate. The road will be built,Á he exclaimed. ÁWå may have to go further up or down the road on the western end. Right nîw, we just have to know the options, and choose the best one.Á Dennis Cooê, an engineer with TDOT, who has been working on the Northern Con nectîr project, echoed CochranÁs thoughts. ÁThå project has not been abandoned. In fact, the idea is to explore alternativås to keep the project moving. What has happened is that we have received a dràft of the archeological report and it indicates some significant ar chaeolîgical sites on the western part of the project along the Wataugà River in the area of the VFW
